There does seem to be some kind of void in a lot of people that is filled with religion (not arguing the validity of it)...
when people choose to abandon religion, that void is still there. It would seem that people fill that void with political dogma, which is the next closest thing to religion. Which is why your get this fervor with Marxism that you don't get with a lot of other political persuasions.
People need a meta-narrative that binds a societies beliefs, ethics and morals together. Religions can give helpful or destructive meta-narratives, and political ideologies can do the same. It can be easier for religion to hold its ground though due to the stronger assertion of a higher power governing the narratives validity.
In starting to think atheism doesnt exist. The mind treats something that way in the place of god. That some belief in some specific thing is beyond questioning. Be it science, government, critical race theory, Zeus, communism, whatever.
For most people I definately agree with this. Some people are quite capable of not having or forming a religion. It's definately a requirement for most people though and so society needs a standard religion or at least, religions that complement each other, in order to function.
