Germany actually helped China against Japan before the Tripartite Pact. They were big trade partners, the Germans helped industrialize them, helped arm them, and helped modernize their military, and this lasted until 1937 (and continued on in a lesser form until the Tripartite Pact). Without Germany's help, Japan probably could have completely overrun China. Mind you, Germany was helping the Kuomintang, not the Communists. It was Japan who weaked the KMT so much that they fell to the Communists.
