When Bill ran, they had Fleetwood Mac! But in those days, Bill was initially popular before he revealed his true scumbag self. Their biggest trick then, was using Ross Perot (third party) to syphon votes away from daddy Bush. They can never just run - they always lie cheat steal and kill.
The Arsenio Hall stunt is what put slick willy on top.
