True enough, but for now I think we just start with a rag-tag group making moves. I think of it like a band... ya got a couple of guys fucking around with their instruments, putting pieces together. Get a few songs together, start playing shows... eventually you get noticed, and someone comes along and asks if you have a manager. Manager will help you book gigs, make sure you get paid, etc. Like Peter Grant did for Led Zeppelin. Peter wasn't there in the beginning, and he wasn't in the band... but he'd break legs to make sure the boys got paid, cuz that's how he got paid.
