The Russians were genius. They were never going to physically attack this country. Instead, they sent thousands of people who here who posed as do gooders, but brought their filthy communism and infiltrated every aspect of American life. Anybody who says we won the cold war is an idiot.
They had more than enough weapons to wipe us out and still have 90% remaining for the rest of the world.
But yes, they also preferred not to do that, so they engaged in many other paths to that goal. And they did have us on the ropes in the 1970s, when their subversive activities were taking hold in the country and another few of Democrats would have likely resulted in our surrender (either defacto or formal surrender)...but then Reagan, and he carried us to victory (back then). The problem with Reagan and really all Republicans since the 1950s is that they never rooted out the Left in this country...and so they got smarter, and stronger, and reached the critical mass they needed to take over...which is where we are now.
