Only people unfamiliar with history think truth and reconciliation commissions are a good idea.

There is not a single instance in history when any supposedly authoritative governing body that pledged to get to the bottom of something by doing an investigation and revealing the truth, ever put the subject to rest. Invariably, more conspiracy theories pop up and the factions become even more entrenched and polarized. They're also pretty useless for historians as well unless they're used as evidence for why politics and the fads of the times got in the way of actual truth.

History shows the best way to stop polarization is for leaders to not address the polarization and focus on areas were a consensus can be reached. However, the left can not ever understand this lesson. The left constantly wants to pick at wounds, rip off scabs and shine a light on the most polarizing and extremist factions. I don't know if the left does this because they really want bloody revolutions and tragic civil wars or they think this will somehow end up peacefully with everyone agreeing with them.

I don't know why the left thinks they can use political commissions composed of odious politicians to use their authority to try and "force" everyone to agree with them. This has never worked in all of human history. It has the exact opposite effect. it may give the left the appearance of legitimacy and authority for a time by which they bash their opponents with "muh commission report" but the reality is, no one ever believes the commission reports including those who write them, even though they pretend they do. Every time someone tries to settle a controversial subject and finally put it to rest, it ends up creating a much bigger and far more intractable problem.

Let's assume in the next four years, the left gets its way on everything and becomes more wildly successful than they dreamed possible...it isn't going to create a consensus, nor is it going to bring people together in praise of the government. It'll have the exact opposite effect. The more the left tries to use cancel culture, authoritarian measures and silencing to end opposition, the more likely they'll embolden extreme opposition, spark opposition in places they never dreamed it would happen and discredit institutions even more than they already have.

Free people in a free society do not act this way. In a free society, we should not really care what our neighbor thinks or does as long as it doesn't directly and immediately impact us. There's always going to be tension but putting a weight on one side of the tension invariably creates counterweights. Why can't the left see how futile such things like this are? Are all their leaders brain dead?
