In my opinion, what actually was going on with that was the following. The reason for 1/6 was to prevent Antifa/BLM from overrunning DC if the Pence gambit had worked. The second it became clear that Pence would not help Trump, there was no valid reason for Trump supporters to remain in DC - in fact by remaining they would be supporting the enemy narrative, in a sense.
The larger fact of life here though, is that there wasn't a realistic prospect of flipping the swamp by that group of people. There was no sustainability, no true organization, and no list of demands, for one thing.
