What I've been thinking about is, how long has it been like this? How much freedom did we really have before 2016? I mean, everyone knows that Romney threw the election to Obama, McCain probably did also. Perhaps, it's not really a change in our situation so much as a wider recognition of the actual situation.

This. I live in a blue leaning area, and the normie Dems loved the "convenience" of mail in voting. Some didn't trust it and were waiting in line with me at the polling spot, but a significant portion support it.

Preeettty sure it didn't involve state legislation this voting cycle in a lot of states. Government officials just said 'we're doing it anyways' and did so using COVID as an excuse/validation.
It may work like you're saying and suddenly the Government starts making states uphold their voter laws more strictly. But if the people in power can cheat and gain power, why wouldn't they keep doing that on both sides?
