I think he knew all that going in. As you say, how could he not have known? Its likely he's gotten credible death thteats every day since June 2015. Why would that suddenly stop him? The only interpretation that makes sense is that on Jan 6th his options for challenging the fraudulent election ended. Fake votes were certified and he has no further recourse (assuming he's unwilling to start a war).
