They are charging him with insurrection. The penalty for that is death. Why would he legalize firing squads for his own death? It doesn’t add up. He also said “the best is yet to come”. I wonder what that could possibly mean.

Impeachment is a political process. He won’t be going to jail. There are constitutional questions if you can impeach someone after he or she has left office.
Honestly we WANT them to proceed with the trial, and we want it drug out as long as possible, because that will piss off the country against Biden. The Trump haters want blood, but the normies just want to move on and get on with life, and if they keep dragging things out, it's not gonna go so well for them politically.
It's possible we're past the point where they care about what looks good politically now, though. They may just decide they're going to do whatever they want since they've solved the "we have to get elected" problem.
