So far, I have yet to see any instance where doing this or that because of "national security" has yielded anything positive.

It's used as a hidden guise to keep the system corrupt for those enjoying its corruption.

I agree. I'm not sold on classification for national security. The pendulum is way to far into classifying everything right now. We should expect far more transparency in a lot of things outside of military matters.
