It's the same Repulic we've had for 60 years... In 2016 an accident happened, the money printers didn't control the primary well enough and a non money printer owned leader actually got through... 2020 was just going to extreme ends to correct that accident.
That's not to say their Oligarchial Repulic is something we should want to be part of...
But they have control over the military and communications. Good luck even raising a civilization force under those conditions.
