Purple dye was very rare in the time of Christ, as it came from diving for and collecting certain mollusks, a difficult task, and therefore very expensive. Only royalty could afford it, so Jesus was draped in purple out of sarcasm, and mocked as “king of the Jews”. Very sad. This symbolism is not lost on them.
