I disagree... he knew going in that conventional channels of communication (MSM both print and video) were stacked against him... and absent the "public square" of social media he would have no way to get messages to the public. One might take issue with some of the messages or style, but he "broke the mold" and the back of the Washington press corp as arbiters of what you hear from the President

but what about every other republican president, they seemed to get thier messages out there to the people, whether it be radio very early in weekly addresses or on tv.

he could have just done a weekly 5 minute video and put it on the WH youtube channel for people to watch.

I believe you have failed to comprehend the "uniparty" - which has been in power since about 1963 (Kennedy)... or 1989 if you exclude Ronald Reagan. Trump challenged that structure on both "left" and "right"... and was not a member of that "club". His challenge to the corruption was a direct threat to both politicians and media within that sphere.
