I'm convinced media like this, X-Files and whatnot were all pushed specifically to help fix their reputation.

Tom Clancy was an idealist. Jack Ryan's defining characteristics in the books were his honesty and his integrity. He had a strong moral compass and refused to do things that were illegal and immoral. But in real life, you don't rise to the upper ranks of the CIA by being like that.

Steve Pieczenik was his business partner and provided all the inside details of how those agencies work. So it's not hard to assume it was used as positive propaganda for them.

Characters in Tom Clancey's novels have a moral center and integrity that no one in the current three-letter agencies could live up to.

It is important to understand the differences between the people that run the agencies, the appointees and career agents or regular employees. Much in the same way that 95% of the crowd on Jan. 6 was not roaming around the capitol building, 95% of all employees of these agencies are not aware of what is going on big-picture wise. They compartment information so that only very few people have a total view of what is happening, and it's with these people your anger should lie

I know... who knew Jack Ryan was most likely a criminal?

If the book Clear and Present Danger were more realistic, the CIA would have been taking bribes from the cocaine cartel instead of waging a covert war against them.
