True story (according to my father):

My father was arrested for public intoxication in the 80s and refused to say anything at all to the police. He didn't have any ID or anything on him and no one knew who he was... because he didn't say a word the judge decided that he was in control of his faculties and let him go despite him being stone cold drunk. It also never showed on his record because it was just a 'John Doe' case.

Seriously, just staying silent is quite a workable strategy... and the fact that some courts have ruled that once you start talking you have waived your 5th Amendment rights makes it all the more vital to remain silent (or say 'I demand a lawyer'). Don't even give them your name if you can avoid it.

As far as I know this has changed over time. Now judges are saying you must specifically invoke your right to silence. Or you must specifically state your right to an attorney. Here is a case example:
