But I must correct you in saying Religion was necessary to keep people from evil. The old religions didn't preach morality, insofar as there were lessons that there are consequences for your actions.
The Old Gods promoted justice and taught us legal systems to be used with honorable people, but also instructed brutality was needed when enemies were at the gate.
