Convention of states can only be called for specific, pre-determined reasons. The reason for this, and it's been underway for years, is Term Limits.
They can't just modify the constitution willy nilly. It doesn't work that way. You need over 30 states just to discuss an issue, and to ratify a change you need 38. If you're seriously worried that every red state is going to remove the second amendment then you need to put down whatever you're smoking.
Amendments still have to be ratified by 38 states. Can you name 38 states that want to get rid of the 2nd amendment or the constitution completely? I think you might find about 10 if you're lucky...
