apologies, i was reading "backup" as a backup of the database/web infrastructure configs, etc. not the domain name. i don't know why you wouldn't use the backups unless you don't own those either, or you don't trust the registrar, or there was some feature of the backup registrar that was needed but didn't have...i don't know. The domain name doesn't mean much to me. applying my experience to their explanations makes perfect sense to me.
They have answered it, he owns them too or at least some of them, and I believe they decided it would be better to just take the opportunity to rebrand.
For maximum safety, assume the site is compromised. It's probably not, but we don't know that 100%, and if we don't know that 100%, we don't know that.
Don't say anything here you wouldn't say to a special agent. (for me that doesn't change much. Glowies already have a file on me (but then again, who don't they have a file on?) )
Why not the backups
Here was Doggos's answer:

thedonald.space is forwarding here, which I see as a good sign, but I'm certainly not technically literate enough to confirm anything.
My guess is that the mods took this opportunity to rebrand. I don't know why it hasn't been answered.
It is answered somewhere in the first stickied post. Or at least I saw it somewhere.
The “Mods” don’t seem to like that question
It makes perfect sense. It means, why not use the backup domains instead of a totally new domain?
