Equality is equal foundations while equity is equal outcomes. For example:
Say you're in a footrace with a bunch of other people. With equality, you all start at the same spot and the finish line is at the same spot off in the distance. The rules are the same for everyone. The starting gun fires and everyone starts running. The fastest person wins.
Now lets introduce equity: Take the example above, big race, everyone starts at the same start line and the finish line is the same for everyone out in the distance. The gun fires, everyone starts running. Except now, instead of the fastest person winning, he and everyone else, are forced to slow down to the slowest persons pace so that everyone crosses the finish line together at the same time. Nobody wins.
In essence, equity is an attempt to create an artificial outcome for everyone and for that outcome to be the same for everyone. Left-leaning idealists claim it's about bringing down the rich while lifting up the poor. The problem with this thinking, is you cannot elevate people past the ceiling of the lowest common denominator (ie: if a person is just naturally slow, it doesn't matter how much they train or work out, they'll always be slow). As a result, the reality of this outcome is a much lower standard for everyone. You cannot reach your true potential because I've already maxed mine out and we have to be equal.
