Plea deal is when you agree to a guilty charge that is lesser in severity than the original, normally in exchange for something beneficial for the prosecutor.

Usually, what's beneficial for the prosecutor is information on other crime/criminals, or a sure guilty when he thinks he might lose the case.

Sometimes just getting a conviction without needing a trial is enough of a benefit for most prosecutors.

"The judge could sentence you to a year in jail, but plea guilty and pay a $5,000 fine and you'll be outta here tomorrow."

Most people would take that deal, even if they had a good chance of winning in court.
