I'm union in a right to work state. We make more money than non union contractors in my trade, and have 2 pensions and paid healthcare. Its very different than mandatory union states. I won't get into it too much unless people have questions but I had been anti union for 10+ years till I actually joined one and I realize I had been lied to my entire working career up to that point. Yeah we dont 'need' unions like we used to, but from my experience on both sides, again, in a right to work state, unions are incredibly valuable to blue collar workers.

They started demanding excessive stuff from their employer. One of the demands was $5 extra per hour for "hazard" pay due to COVID. Every week I went, it was strange because the shelves were getting more and more empty and not being restocked as well. I figured it was supply-chain issues. Then one day I went and the entire store was closed completely.
Turns out the owner saw the writing on the wall with the employees he had (bunch of socialist commies) and decided to just completely pull out. He knew he wouldn't be able to make any money with these commie workers so he took his money and ran for the hills. On the last day of operation, he closed the store early and then overnight had a bunch of day laborers clear out everything left in the store. When the employees showed up the next day, there was a notice on the door that the store was closed and they were laid off effective immediately.

Then, they would lay him off every winter (carpenter) and would tell him NOT to do side jobs or look for work. He thought this was insane having small children in early 80s when the economy was fucked up still from Carter adm. He finally said fuck this and went in business for himself. Even now when he encounters union guys on jobs it is a total fucking mess because even though he can do basic electrical stuff or basic tear out/clean up, he isnt allowed to touch it. But the unions directly compete with small businesses, especially in the trades. They contribute to the out of control housing prices and funnel money to democrats.

Yup, exactly. There was a grocery store in my area that was non-union and then the employees started all gathering together to basically form their own union. They started demanding excessive stuff from their employer. One of the demands was $5 extra per hour for "hazard" pay due to COVID. Every week I went, it was strange because the shelves were getting more and more empty and not being restocked as well. I figured it was supply-chain issues. Then one day I went and the entire store was closed completely. Turns out the owner saw the writing on the wall with the employees he had (bunch of socialist commies) and decided to just completely pull out. He knew he wouldn't be able to make any money with these commie workers so he took his money and ran for the hills. On the last day of operation, he closed the store early and then overnight had a bunch of day laborers clear out everything left in the store. When the employees showed up the next day, there was a notice on the door that the store was closed and they were laid off effective immediately.
This was mostly a sad story, but the ending was heart-warming.

Yes, Im in a midwestern red state that still has heavy union influence. The labor/construction unions were good when my dad was younger and kept his wages up + health insurance. Then, they would lay him off every winter (carpenter) and would tell him NOT to do side jobs or look for work. He thought this was insane having small children in early 80s when the economy was fucked up still from Carter adm. He finally said fuck this and went in business for himself. Even now when he encounters union guys on jobs it is a total fucking mess because even though he can do basic electrical stuff or basic tear out/clean up, he isnt allowed to touch it. Has to stop what he is doing and call the local (fill in the blank #) to send out one of the token minorities to do the job half assed and wrong so he has to fix it himself. Totally not efficient.

To be fair working in management in automotive their union leaders say jump and they say how high not out of blind loyalty but the risk of losing their job.
