The polarization actually started under Obama I think when leftists started calling anyone who disagreed with anything Obama did/supported a “racist”, because apparently nobody could possibly disagree with a “black” president without being racist.
No matter how much you ignored Obama’s race and focused on the issues, they tried to make it about race and couldn’t possibly comprehend that maybe, just maybe, not everyone was totally obsessed with that like they were.
Seems like the strategy was, elect a 70s Marxist radical then if anyone objected to anything he did call them racist to shut them down rather than discuss the issues.
