Maybe you don't recall but a large number of registered republicans were more than ready to walk away from the GOP before Trump ran. He only extended their life by 4 years.

At the end of the day, the leadership of the GOP is no different from the leadership of the DNC. They may occasionally compete for a better spot at the trough but they usually work together to preserve the con.
