Yeah, this isn't a state vs state thing. This is neighbor vs neighbor.

This is neighbor vs neighbor.

Always has been, etc...

Everyone keeps thinking this will be like the Revolutionary War or a replay of the Civil War and I keep telling people it's going to be Rwanda, it's going to be Reign of Terror France. If you want a Civil War go next door and shoot your neighbors in the head^1. That's what it's going to be like.

We're divided ideologically and by our religious, philosophical beliefs at a fundamental level. Not by geography. Any such war on that basis is going to be a bloody catastrophe because there is no separation of noncombatants or civilians. The enemy would be on all sides and you can never know if your neighbors across the street were considering coming across and shooting you in the head.

This is why no sane person wants a civil war in America. Unfortunately there are some things that simply cannot be borne and to a people who were born free being made slaves of the state is one of them. The road we are on makes conflicts inevitable. I just wish we were separated by geography so at least the children would be protected and that there would be an agreed upon 'front' for the battles away from noncombatants and families.

^1 Do not do this. That was hyperbole to illustrate the horror of what is to come not advocacy for behavior.

With the exception of whites, race is a strong, visible proxy for political affiliation. That would be the first order conflict in the event of a political civil war. You might not know where your white neighbours stand, but you will be 95% sure that your black neighbours are Democrats.

Not true. Trump got more blacks and latinos into the fold and they stood up for him even though they were labeled Uncle Tom's and worse in the communities. You can't assume that they are all Democrats anylonger just like you can't assume all whites are Republican.
