I used to think the same but after talking to some deaf people (lol) it turns out that sign language is actually a language to them and more importantly, to them it's like hearing vs reading for us. I don't see why they can't have a "turn off gang signs" setting like with closed captions if they're going to make this a thing.
I have a gut feeling that it's something more than mere virtue signaling. We know these creeps love their symbolism - what if this too is another extension of that?
After all, a sign language interpreter only repeats what they've been told, and has no voice of their own.

Youtube can have almost realtime ~90% accurate closed captions but no we must waste money hiring signers for the fraction of the population that understands sign language and muh diversity virtue-signalling!
