Let me tell you about my county that I live in in Ohio. My county has voted Republican in EVERY election from 1856 to 2020 with TWO exceptions.
1912 Wilson won a plurality against T. Roosevelt and Taft. If you add that Republican split together it is almost 70% of to the vote. My county didn't want a DEM (actually T. Roosevelt lost by less than 200 votes). I don't count that as a DEM win.
1964 Goldwater lost 44% to 56%.
I attribute this to "Kennedy Worship"
Folks at that time didn't want to disrepect a slain President by voting his party out of power. LBJ was going to be a shoo in regardless of who his opponent was. BJ was a sacrificial lamb in the 1964 election. BG had no chance to win.

I've never understood this flipping argument.
They will tell you it's the 1964 presidential election, just by looking at the presidential state electoral map.
They wont get into the specifics of why that map looks the way it does, or the issues of the day that LBJ and BG were debating in that election.
The 1964 Pres election is FAR MORE COMPLICATED than what a cursory glance at an electoral map would tell you!
