The Fort was called Battery Wagner on Morris Island, S.C. I had friends on the adjacent James Island, S.C. who took me out to Morris Island a couple of times so I could walk it from one end to the other. The area where Wagner stood is under water now. Battery Gregg was at the north end of Morris Island at Cummings Point. At the southern end of Morris Island was the lighthouse, and Lighthouse Inlet, which the 54th crossed over from Folly Island to attack Battery Wagner. At the north end of Folly was Fort Greene. The Union Forces had their headquarters at the southern end of Folly. I spent a lot of time visiting friends on James Island back in the late 90's, and onwards. They were involved in preserving the various Civil War sites in the area. I was fortunate enough to have walked the ground where the 54th and 55th Massachusetts camped, fought and died. Those are times I will never forget.
