DC was set up to not be a state. If its that much a problem for you/them, they can easily be absorbed by Virginia.

We had a far less powerful federal government back then, but even by today's standards states still have plenty of autonomy. The fear was that being place in lone state would give that state more power (real or imagined) over the congress.

No. I guess you are not familiar with the phrase 'real or imagined', it doesn't mean a threat is not real. It means, as in this case, that the state may or may not have power in such a scenario but even the perception of it by itself or congress would be dangerous enough. But it wouldn't be imagined, you'd be housing the seat of power in a state, you would be operating in accordance to their laws, something all the other states wouldn't have.
