It’s all a twist on the, “So when did you stop beating your wife?” accusation disguised as a question. There’s no genuine curiosity to the response, just a backhanded way of impugning one’s reputation. What other choice do have you been given other than, “Why, of course I am...I’m, ‘white’. Now, onto the subject at hand”. Once the weaponized word has been neutered, you’ll often find there’s not much substance to whatever talking point the accuser is espousing. It’s both sad and unacceptable that this has gotten so out of hand in this day and age.
