I'm in Taiwan and have been for 20 years, China does this regularly to wear out their planes, seriously. Taiwan is not on the verge of war and this is not how China would go about it.
They put planes up in the air so Taiwan puts their planes to incept, they do this daily to wear out the hardware.
The more interesting question is what is China going to do as a next step. Short answer it will involve islands with no population that are outside the Taiwan relations act.
