Let's not lie to ourselves. While we are ultimately paying some taxes that may partially go towards it, we as a nation are financing ourselves via debt. We haven't had a balanced budget it quite some time, so saying we're paying for it is a lie...we're paying for their benefits with a credit card.
Definitely agree. I suspect we (at least people in my bracket or above) will be taxed more though and they'll use expanded welfare as part of the justification. "Trump's mishandling of the virus in the critical early hours led to this" is what they'll say. The masses will laud it a) because it bashes Trump and b) it doesn't immediately affect them. So to put it in your analogy - it's still going on credit, but our minimum monthly payment will go up.
I will suffer because after all I've worked for to pull myself out of poverty, they'll be telling me "fuck you".
