my point is far more nuanced than you picked up on, so i'll try it again: it is everybody else relying on fossil fuels that makes us want to keep using fossil. if the USA themselves swapped to nuclear there'd be very little difference for us domestically apart from increased energy costs in the short term and decreased in the long term. domestic energy production for the USA isn't important in this discussion. what is important is 1) how much we control fossil energy in the world right now and 2) how much other nations rely on it.

Material science still has some work to do as I understand it to make it feasible to deal longer term with the hot liquid salt, but it's already proven to be a net positive reactor that's scalable. I know 10 years ago China was investing heavily in this research, but as a country they're not great at advanced metallurgy- it's why they buy Russian jets, strip the engines, and put them in their craft.

There’s another issue too: shutting down the pipeline doesn’t do shit to stop petroleum from being moved and used. Everyone still needs that and so it still gets transported and used.
When there’s no pipeline the oil gets transported by trains which are more dangerous and more prone to spills.
The only people this helps are the ones who don’t want the pipeline going across their specific land where it looks ugly, similar to people not wanting a train track built next to their house, but that’s about it.
... which means instead of getting it from the US or Canada, these regulations just means we have to buy it from our enemies.
I'm sure Joe totally isn't getting kickbacks from foreign entities for shutting down the US oil industry.
