This will force people to fly. FAA will require covid vaccine to fly. Only way to get everyone to succumb to vaccine. If you never travel and can work from home, they will figure out another way to vaccinate you.
Hear about the new work from home tax ? Yes because you are no longer commuting and spending money at the shops and restaurants around your work place they want you to pay a special tax which by magic is gonna get to the workers you are hurting by not driving to work and going out to lunch. It was alot btw, 5% I think was the proposal.
The issue with the gas tax (i'm not for the bullshit stated by buttgag) is that it doesn't apply to electric cars at all and it applies to hybrids poorly.
We DO need a better way to track, but this is a state level issue, not a federal one.
Hmm, states issue tags. Not the federal government. This would be a direct assault on commuters and anyone not living in a major urban center. So once again the metropolitan egalitarians taking a shit on the rest of the country, I mean "fly over country".
And I say that as a life long NYC resident. You know, one of the epicenters of evil on this planet.
Who is this going to hurt the most? With the Wuhan Flu lockdowns, white collar companies (mine inclusive) have gone remote. Who can't go remote? Restaurant workers, grocery store workers, delivery drivers (OK, I'm biased, my son drives for UPS and has a 25 mile 1 way commute to the distribution facility). Anybody that can work from home will work from home.
They wanted more fuel efficient vehicles, they got them. They wanted less driving, they got it. Now the money is drying up and need a new revenue stream.
Will they eliminate the existing gas tax, or will this be an additional tax? If it is additional, those who cannot work remotely are doubly screwed.
Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Ind., acknowledged "privacy concerns" related to implementing a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) system but said it should be considered as a potential replacement for the gas tax.
Gee, too hard to increase the federal gas tax or charge a fee for owners of electric vehicles? Hell, they could just assess a fee for all tagged vehicles and collect it when you have to renew your registration.
But noooooo, much better to install a system that tracks our movements right, Pete? There's no way they can ensure that info would be used for other purposes besides determining mileage. At the very least it would be used to target marketing efforts.

Poor tax for people who can’t afford to live close to their jobs. Also, big tax on red states, especially Texas
We call a simple mileage tracker an "odometer".
Anything beyond that, particularly something that utilizes GPS and dumps data relating to travel is indeed monitoring.
Besides, there is already a mileage tax. You pay it at the gas pump, and it directly correlates to mileage.

Electricity is taxed as well.
This year, every cent you make before 17 April is tax.
This is just another cash and control grab, nothing more.

You're welcome to move to Kansas City, Omaha or Somewhere in Texas!
This will literally CRUSH states like Nebraska, SD, Kansas, Colorado, Montana and anyone that lives rural.
This is a punishment to those living outside the city.
