The NRA is controlled opposition.

They were sued into oblivion

They started off as a firearms competency organization. I don't think Gun Rights was really a thing of theirs until the 1970s; they even testified in favor of the NFA.

One of their first actions was to petition the NY state legislature to give them money.

They have always been grifters.

They backstabbed their supporters, but forgot to invest in Dominion.

I hold an NRA Instructor cert (only because it was a prerequisite for a cert I wanted from a separate organization) and after going through the process to get the NRA cert, I no longer have confidence in their integrity as a corporation.

What I tell my students now is that in the context of training/education and safety advocacy, the NRA is the biggest gorilla in the room, but it's getting smaller. The USCCA is the next biggest gorilla in the room, and it's getting bigger. In the context of gun rights lobbying and legal advocacy, there are many other, smaller organizations with better track records. National Association for Gun Rights, Second Amendment Fountation, and Gun Owners of America for example. There are others, but those are the three I would consider the "biggest players" with the most to show for their efforts.

For an "originalist" 2A supporter such as myself, I view the NRA as the "RNC establishment" of the gun rights community. They're lousy with Fudds and as such, aren't willing to fight hard for the 2A as interpreted by originalists. At present, the NRA is not completely worthless, they have some good programs for education and safety accomplishments, but IMO, the NRA's days are numbered unless they get a lot more efficient and aggressive on the political front.
