Only later did I find out that he wasn't even Canadian, he was from South Africa and moved to Canada before moving to San Francisco. He would call Nelson Mandela "Madiba" in casual conversation. He though being from South Africa made him an expert on the beauty of multiculturalism. He also thought that all of South Africa's modern strife is caused by evil nationalists ruining everything. That put him in such a new light. He wasn't merely Canadian, he was a true "citizen of the world" type. No pride in anything except his commitment to guilt-based multi-culturalism.
I'm haunted by the sincerity of his hateful and destructive beliefs, and how hateful he perceived all alternatives to be. He exuded disdain for anyone who disagreed, and since he thought his beliefs made him a nice guy, he didn't even try to be nice.
He was the most post-national person I've ever met, and one of the most politically detestable.
Been to South Africa. Watched 15 government workers (all black because that’s the only people who are hired by law) stand around a job site for 3 hours then go to lunch at 1130. Didn’t come back to work.
Found out later the road still hasn’t been fixed in 8 years. That was the norm.
