Union leadership is quite often not derived from union membership anymore. You know that idea of the Everyman union guy getting voted in as the guy in charge? Doesn’t happen. Union organizations are as divorced from their base as anything else in this country. The power structure is staffed with activists, many who get hired fresh out of college and wouldn’t know how to handle a wrench if it hit them in the face.

I’ve heard they staff up with people who don’t have union experience. Do you think the unions leave these things up to chance?

I feel sorry for the guys who have to pay those dues in order to work, but don’t vote the union line in politics.
