Civil disobedience is not peace. Is force by mass numbers. Even if there is no fire shot. Which it was, but lot less mediatizated. There was another violent group acting. Authorities, lost anyway choose to talk with Gandhi. Anyway in that time the regime was a joke respect to population.

Actually, while Gandhi was starving himself, other Indian independence groups were blowing up building and assassinating British dignitaries. He was basically the propaganda face of the movement.

Read some history. Some Monarchies were loved, but commies forced abdications. See Bulgaria, Mecadonia ,Serbia ,Romania,. When we talk commies, nr is not important. 10% can turn the rest of population. Ideology is very tricky on commies.
