Because they don't pay attention to politics. Locker rooms and bathrooms aren't really visible things. Sports is high profile and people follow it very closely. A lot of people have huge emotional investment in their favorite athlete.

I agree that people should not be able to just say "I identify as" and go wherever they please. The correct way to handle it is to set some ground rules that require them to do things that make it difficult or impossible to cause trouble first. But nobody seems to want to listen to that on either side of the aisle. Everybody just has their opinions, their prejudices, and their feelings and that's all they care about.
Don’t get yourself twisted up about it. The “muh womens sports” people are concerned about all of the things you mentioned. But they don’t want to be unpersoned for those opinions so they express their feelings through the socially acceptable avenue of women’s sports.
