They do not need to care what people think because they control election results anyway. So from a viewpoint far away I have to say: it is normal to have hope for a "quick fix" of current terrible situation but reality is much more sad unfortunately and things might get more worse from now and it might need decades for a solution :(
yes I am from Germany and I know what Merkel said but we have experience with GDR as well which is similar to US now - took around 40 years to remove.
The only thing you can do: fight for proper election regulations - anything else is waste of time at the moment and you can hope for just a "miracle".
