I read 50% of the debt is $10k or less and 85% is under $50k.

So the “crushing debt” is for a small minority 10% or so that probably went to out of state schools, or private institutions racked up huge loans for tuition and room/board and graduated as art history, psychology or women studies majors. Working on their masters or doctorates and getting even more debt because there no way they can get a real job with those education options.
