You are correct on all counts except one - the dems don't care if they look like tyrants, they already do. The democrat leadership is interested in only two things - power and money. They don't care what law they break or what lies they tell, or what damage they do to the nation as long as it leads to more power and money. And you're right, not only is there no such thing as an impeachment trial for a president who does not currently hold office, but the constitution stipulates it SHALL BE the Chief Justice who presides. Justice Roberts has declined, but they're proceeding anyway, so we can assume this will be a kangaroo court, a propaganda stunt meant to attack conservatives. Nothing that happens will have the force of law though they will declare it does. What's one more lie to these people?
