Yaesu FT60 is a good entry radio running around 100. I would stay away from Baofeng as they get alot of hate and they are made by Joe's friends overseas.

Thank you, I will look into this. What is a good next step up to a more powerful radio? I need a permit to transmit, right?

Yes you need a license to operate. More powerful radios operate on the HF bands (thats your typical big antenna home setup). This UHF/VHF radio has a short range but can link into internet based repeaters and connect across the globe.
