Parler bound themselves to a company that despises pro-first amendment companies. This is a lesson for all other similar companies. Each and every link in the product chain can be targeted from hosting, to cloud services, just about everything.
How would an impartial judge calculate the financial damages Amazon inflicted on Parler. Amazon needs to be broken apart by anti-trust legislation. Break AWS apart from the rest of Amazon.
This is true. Bu what is also true is: how incompetent is Parler to:put everything on Amazon to the point of NOT having source code backup out of the Amazon ecosystem, so they can spin the service on any other cloud provider or otherwise.
It's kind of more complicated, even if outward facing it's "just a website". At Twitters of even at Parlers scale simple things stop being simple anymore. But the point of utter incompetence to not have all of the source code and data backed up off site still stands.
I find it really, really, really hard to believe they weren't using git which, if they use it, creates a clone of their code on every dev's computer. Maybe they're just bullshitting a bit to drive Amazon's maliciousness home.
The part about them taking the code is not true - and if Parler didn’t have a backup of their source code and database then they deserved what happened because that’s data security 101.
What happened was that Parler leveraged the proprietary hooks and APIs of AWS which made changing to a new host more than just a move, it required a re-write of some code.
I’m not saying what happened was right or wrong - rather, the declaration that Amazon held their code hostage is false.
By killing Parler, unfair as it is, the left makes Gab practically the only alternative which helps since the social media platform that has the lion’s share ultimately is the winner.
I'm still shaking my head that Parler was using AWS. Parler saw that GAB had been deplatformed and had to find its way back.
Evidently, AWS' contracts have language that allow them to deplatform customers at their (Amazon's) whim. Parler's attorney(s) must have known this. Doesn't make sense.
Jeff Bezoz originally wanted to call his company ‘Relentless’ but was talked out of it. To this day, www.relentless.com forwards to Amazon. Pretty telling of what kind of crazy megalomaniac that fucker is.
I had a lib friend make a snarky comment about Parler's lack of business continuation plan which I thought was a bit unfair considering their size but if they were storing their code on AWS, they were definitely not acting competently.
We need more effort on the payment processing and starting our own banks and credit unions....We have the power now is the time to start exercising our power to become as independent from the beast system as possible..
Yeah, sorry... If they didn't backup offline they deserve every fucking bit of it. What sort of idiot doesn't backup offline. I backup my downloaded movies offline, and I invested 0 time making them.

What kind of an idiot Software team doesn't store their stuff in git? This is more embarrassing than picking AWS as your primary host.
I don't actually believe it (unless they travelled back in time a decade to recruit their tech talent).

Amazon execs deserve helicopter rides.
The best move would be for them to get behind Gab.
Sounds like those in charge of Parler were way too trusting of big tech tyrants.

If you're going to design code, make it cloud agnostic. Building to the provider's specs is quicker time to market, but you're a potential hostage.
What happens when AWS doesn't like the decisions that its government customers make? Can they do the same thing?
Seriously, are any credit cards based?
