People like this are psychologically damaged. The refusal to consume and evaluate information for themselves is a defence mechanism to protect a fragile psyche. They are brainwashed, and deep in their subconscious they know/suspect they have been brainwashed. They are constantly dealing with cognitive dissonance as their version of reality fails to marry up with actual reality. Unfortunately, they're part of a social structure that makes it extremely hard for them to adopt truth, because they will end up cast out. As social creatures, it's more important for us to fit into the group than it is to embrace truth.
I know... for the longest time I refused to watch a documentary debunking the Sobibor Death Camp, because the societal implications for a false narrative around the Holocaust were so dire, and the personal implications of potentially ending up a "Holocaust Denier" were real. I fully expected it to be Holocaust Denial nonsense, but instead of just watching it and judging for myself etc, I found instead that I was creating excuses in my head to not watch it at all. I mean, if they would lie about that, then they're capable of... I dunno, stealing the presidential election and lying barefacedly about it.

My father said "you can pick your friends but not your family". The only family I talk to are my one sibling and my mother. I wouldn't have picked ANY of the others to be friends with so why would I want to associate with them just because they have common genetics.
