I thought you could impeach after they are out of office, why did that suddenly change today/yesterday?

No. Impeachment was meant to remove a bad president from office, nothing more. That's why Richard Nixon's resignation ended his impeachment trial; because the impeachment was moot after he left office. Impeaching Trump after he's already out of office is a massive, unconstitutional rule change. But since they're making up new rules as they go along without thinking of the consequences, we might as well take advantage of it.

what do they hope to accomplish by impeaching him now?

They're truly afraid of him and what he has started in his supporters. The amount of people who don't buy their lies is massive. Maybe they hope it will kill our morale. They definitely don't want him to run again. That's why with this impeachment, they're trying to ban him from holding any future government office. They're even trying to ban his entire family from future offices.

I've never seen more blatant display of corruption, especially by an entire party. It's almost like they want you to see how evil they are. Take the election, for example. I've never seen people be so bad at cheating in my life. A group of 5 year olds would've seen it. They had to have wanted to be caught.
