I've seen people make absolute bomb holes out of the fire control pocket, and they're still usable. They're not hard to do though if you've ever used power tools before and have any sort of common sense. Use a quality jig, and you'll do fine.
If you're on Facebook, scope out the 80% builders group. I don't know how they do it, but there's no shortage of people making trigger pockets that look like a squirrel chewed them out, and depending on how bad it is, it's either good to go or they're told to JB Weld it and re-do it. lol. Figure it this way though, if you completely botch a lower, it's only $40 or $50. Not a big deal. They really aren't hard to do though, so don't be intimidated.
I'd like to get into the AR lowers, but they seem like a LOT harder, and have tighter tolerances.

Really? I was watching a guide and the dude said it HAD to be within a few thousandths tolerance.
