A lot of unions will have programs for "helpers", where you can work on a jobsite alongside the union employees. Make a good impression as a helper, and you can get a letter of recommendation from a journeyman or foreman. That's the golden ticket in.

I can only speak for my Union. Yes everyone is elected by the workers, but only at the local level. So I can vote for every rep in my local (comparable to my city) but I cannot vote for any reps in neighboring locals (like neighboring cities). I also cannot vote for any of the administration in my district (comparable to a state) nor can I vote for any of the administration that coordinates all of the locals (comparable to federal government)

Back in the early 90s my dad worked for a large yellow and black company and there was a massive union strike that went on for months. My dad and the other office workers were pulled into the factories on a rotational basis to keep things running. The machine that he worked on had been set to the slowest possible speed by the previous (union) worker. Once my dad learned how to run it he was producing parts almost twice as fast.
The workers on strike would also write letters to the newspaper with these ridiculous claims. One guy said that [big evil company] had fired him for fixing a poster on a bulletin board that had fallen down. Another guy claimed he was fired for picking a tomato in his garden.
Needless to say, I don't exactly have a super positive view of unions....
My dad was an engineer at a nuclear plant. He wasn't union but told stories about dealing with unions. During a battery replacement project the day shift intentionally cut the metal that holds batteries in place down to the concrete, extending the project. He reported it and the union workers basically threatened to screw up more. He went to management to get some kind of intervention and they basically said not to pass off the union. A threat to a nuclear plant in the USA and they bent the knee to the union.
On the flip side, when the union went on strike and the plant kept non union workers operating the plant they flew in lobster and filets to feed those who were working. Unions suck.

Yes it is, the meetings are super creepy. You actually swear an oath to put the interests of the union before your own, and never undermine them.
Let's put it this way. I used to work at Disney at the service level. Even the employees in those unions didn't like the union.....and this is Disney.....a company where the vast majority of the workers are dems. The vast majority of the workers didn't even bother to vote in the union votes.
It is really strange too because they talk about how unions are the "solution" but then somehow all the unions at Disney are crap.....never connecting the dots.
The reality is if your union is representing unskilled workers then the union is useless because the workers are unskilled, easily replaced. The good unions are the ones representing skilled workers since those workers aren't easy to replace....but guess what? If you are a skilled worker then you can just negotiate on your own and probably do jus as good or better so in every situation, the union is useless.
If people want to make more money: get more skills and be fucking good at what you do. It really is that simple. If you have a shit job/shit pay - 100% your fault but recognizing that it is within your control you can improve by getting different skills. The worst thing you can do is blame someone else for your shit pay (literally the exact thing dems do). How many times have we heard about the rich or corporations being "Greedy"?

I can only speak for my Union. Yes everyone is elected by the workers, but only at the local level. So I can vote for every rep in my local (comparable to my city) but I cannot vote for any reps in neighboring locals (like neighboring cities). I also cannot vote for any of the administration in my district (comparable to a state) nor can I vote for any of the administration that coordinates all of the locals (comparable to federal government)
The Union is a pretty complicated machine with a lot of moving parts. But it operates very much like its own little country within a country. We have our own constitution, elections, tribunals, and bylaws. Its kind of creepy sometimes.

Most of the problems come from the companies trying to screw over the workers, and the union hall does a pretty good job of defending us, to their credit.
But by far, union administration is responsible for bloat. Far too much of our union dues goes towards admin and not towards the interests of the workers. My local alone pulls in over $300,000/month in dues and Lord knows where it all goes..

Back in the early 90s my dad worked for a large yellow and black company and there was a massive union strike that went on for months. My dad and the other office workers were pulled into the factories on a rotational basis to keep things running. The machine that he worked on had been set to the slowest possible speed by the previous (union) worker. Once my dad learned how to run it he was producing parts almost twice as fast.
The workers on strike would also write letters to the newspaper with these ridiculous claims. One guy said that [big evil company] had fired him for fixing a poster on a bulletin board that had fallen down. Another guy claimed he was fired for picking a tomato in his garden.
Needless to say, I don't exactly have a super positive view of unions....
My dad was an engineer at a nuclear plant. He wasn't union but told stories about dealing with unions. During a battery replacement project the day shift intentionally cut the metal that holds batteries in place down to the concrete, extending the project. He reported it and the union workers basically threatened to screw up more. He went to management to get some kind of intervention and they basically said not to pass off the union. A threat to a nuclear plant in the USA and they bent the knee to the union.
On the flip side, when the union went on strike and the plant kept non union workers operating the plant they flew in lobster and filets to feed those who were working. Unions suck.
Well sure but you will be doing the same thing someday when you get to where they are. You seem to not like unions because you are still in the "dues paying stage" but not because they are fundamentally fucked this day and age.
The dues paying stage sucks. But once you get past that... The wages are good, guaranteed raises, full medical at no cost, annuity, pension, 401k, death benefits, life insurance, and above all... Job security. If a company ever demands I do something unethical or puts my crew in danger (it's construction. It happens all the time) I can say "fuck you, I'll walk off this job" knowing I've got another job waiting for me at the union hall.
It's great for the hardworkers that deserve it. Just sucks we've got lazy mooches exploiting it.

These posts piss me off tbh, we have no say in what our upper upper upper management does as far as endorsements. I can't name a single person at my local that voted for Biden, everyone was either die hard Trump supporters or didn't follow politics at all, and it was very few people who didn't follow politics. We got raises and better healthcare under Trump and everyone was very very very aware of that.
I remember seeing the USW building in Pittsburgh projecting a pro Biden Harris message on their building and just shaking my head. Trump has only been about the most pro blue-collar president in my lifetime. Not to mention he helped US Steel while president. You would have thought at the very least they would have been neutral.
