They'll start firing that lazy coworker everyone has to put up with and collectively have to do his work for him and promote some guy who goes above and beyond.

Already happens. We all know whos a worthless piece of shit, they get laid off first and hired last.

Even the best of us gets laid off sometimes, work gets slow, but if you ever run into someone bemoaning that "the union just couldnt keep them in work" .... he's that guy

My dislike comes from shit like Signing up to take 6 union tests and not even getting an invite to go take the fucking tests, I'd understand not getting picked after not passing the test, but not even getting called / emailed to come take the test, what the fuck?

Yeah I get that. We get an overwhelming amount of applications (thousands for a single intake) and great people get declined all the time. A lot of unions will have programs for "helpers", where you can work on a jobsite alongside the union employees. Make a good impression as a helper, and you can get a letter of recommendation from a journeyman or foreman. That's the golden ticket in.

I gave up on that about 2 years ago when I decided to say fuck it and go for a CS degree, lol, but appreciate the insight, I've got a few buddies I might point in that direction.
