The reality of this situation is it's always been like this. Pay for scientists to say something and boom you're right and backed by science. It's been happening for ages. The sugar industry was propped up this exact way.
The problem is the politicization of science is only getting worse. Want to fund your new pipe dream with Oil money? Hire some researchers and you've got yourself billions, but it comes at the expense of other industries rather than getting there on its own (a true communist dream). The worst part is many in the science field don't want to admit it, and have been fed propaganda through the education system to actually think they're doing the right thing.
